One side up and one side down? A rear corner standing proud of the roofline? That is the fault we see on Mercedes panoramic roofs more than any other.
An uneven panoramic roof is a mechanical alignment problem. The glass is carried on lift mechanisms, guides and tracks that have to move both sides together, and when one side stops keeping pace it shows up immediately in how the roof sits and behaves.

The Single Most Common Mercedes Panoramic Roof Complaint
Most owners spot this one from outside the car. The roof looks wrong. One corner of the glass — usually at the back — is standing up out of the roofline while the rest of the panel sits where it should, and no amount of pressing the switch brings it back down level.
What makes it confusing is how ordinary it can seem at first. Plenty of these roofs still move. They will open, or part-open, or close most of the way, so it can feel like a glitch rather than a failure. It is not a glitch. Once the two sides of a panoramic roof stop travelling together, something in the mechanism that keeps them synchronised has given up, and it will not come back on its own.
It is also worth acting on sooner rather than later. A panel that cannot pull down evenly is no longer sealing evenly either, so what starts as a cosmetic annoyance tends to turn into wind noise and then water in the cabin — and every further attempt to force the roof shut puts load through parts that are already damaged.
There is no single answer that fits every vehicle. What we can say is that an uneven roof is almost always telling you that one side has lost the mechanical control the other side still has, and depending on the vehicle and the way it failed, the cause usually sits somewhere among these:
Lift mechanism and lift arms. Each side of the glass is raised and lowered by its own mechanism. When an arm distorts or a component in it breaks, that corner stops being held at the right height — which is exactly what produces the raised rear corner owners describe.
Tracks. Wear, debris, or a roof that has been forced shut can leave the tracks out of adjustment, so the panel no longer has a straight, even path to travel along or a level position to settle into.
Guides and sliders. These plastic components take the load every time the roof moves. Once one cracks or wears through, the panel loses its reference position on that side and the two halves stop moving in step.
Cables. The drive cables have to stay seated and move evenly. A cable that has slipped, stretched or started to bind will drive one side differently from the other.
Alignment components. Even with sound parts, a roof that has been disturbed — or previously worked on and left unfinished — can sit out of level until it is properly reset and re-aligned.
Motor operation and synchronisation. A panoramic system expects both sides to arrive together. When they do not, the control system will often stop or reverse the roof rather than force it. That is why a roof that opens halfway and backs off is frequently reporting a mechanical problem, not an electrical one.
Glass adjustment. The panel itself has to be set correctly in relation to the roofline. If it is not, the roof can look and feel wrong even once the parts beneath it are sound.
Owners often arrive having already tried the reinitialisation procedure, sometimes several times. That is a reasonable thing to try, and on a roof whose parts are all intact it can restore normal operation.
What a reset cannot do is repair anything physical. If a track, guide, lift mechanism, cable or other mechanical component has actually broken, no amount of reinitialising will put it back together — the roof will simply relearn the same faulty positions. When a reset makes no difference, that is usually a fairly good indication the problem is mechanical and the assembly needs to be opened up and looked at.

An Uneven Roof Is Not The Only Thing That Goes Wrong
A Mercedes-Benz panoramic roof is not a single moving part. Guide tracks, a lift mechanism, drive cables, a motor, a sliding sunshade, drain tubes and the glass panels all have to stay in adjustment together for the roof to open, close and seal properly. Diagnosis matters because the same complaint can come from more than one of those.
Motors and electrical faults. Sometimes the motor itself has failed; sometimes the motor is fine and the mechanism it drives has given up. From the driver’s seat those feel very similar, which is why we test the roof under power before forming an opinion rather than replacing parts on assumption.
Sunshades and curtains. The shade runs in its own channel, separate from the glass. It can jam, sag or come off its guides while the roof still works normally — and it can also be what is obstructing a roof that seems mechanically sound. See our Sunroof Shade & Curtain Repair page.
Drains and water leaks. A panoramic roof is not sealed like a fixed window. Water that gets past the seal is meant to run down drain tubes and back out of the vehicle. When those block or split it goes into the cabin instead, often surfacing at a front corner or down a pillar rather than directly beneath the glass. Panoramic roof alignment. The glass is larger and heavier than a conventional sunroof panel and travels further, so there is simply more that can drift out of adjustment over time. Reaching any of it means removing the glass and dropping part of the headliner with the interior protected — which is why this work is done in our shop rather than in a driveway.

Panoramic glass is tempered, so when it fails it does not usually crack in a line — it breaks into a sheet of small fragments held loosely in the opening. It is worth getting the vehicle inside and covered rather than leaving it exposed to Houston weather once that has happened.
Replacing the panel is not simply a matter of dropping new glass into the hole. The opening is cleared, the replacement panel is set, and the assembly is then realigned and cycled so the glass sits level and seals correctly across its whole travel. Not every vehicle needs every one of these stages — what the roof is doing decides how far the job has to go. This is the sequence we work through:
Before anything is taken apart we look at where the glass is actually resting, then run the roof and watch both sides through the travel it still has.
Mechanical, electrical, alignment, or a combination of them. Getting this right first is what stops parts being replaced on a guess.
Tracks, lift mechanisms, guides, cables and motor operation are checked directly rather than inferred from the symptom.
On most uneven-roof jobs the panel has to come off, or be moved out of the way, before the components underneath can be reached and assessed properly.
Lift arms, guides, sliders, track components, cables and motor faults are dealt with according to what the inspection actually found. Where the original assembly can be repaired and brought back into adjustment, we do that rather than replacing the whole unit by default.
The panel is set so both sides sit level with each other and flush with the roofline — the part that determines whether the roof looks right and seals right.
Once the mechanical side is sound, the system is reset and taught its positions again so the roof operates normally through its range.
Opening, closing, tilt position, flush alignment and drainage are all checked, so the repair is confirmed rather than assumed.
